Phil Teefy

Always coming up with some new twists on the mold making process, Phil has developed a whole set of advanced kiln forming techniques for this revised 3-day class. The emphasis of this survey class is to study new and diverse molds materials. You will learn which mold material is best for any given situation, gain insight into the wide variety of applications for cast glass and experience first hand the specific techniques unique to each material.
Project 1 – Cast Leaf. Using a Hi-Aluminum mold mix, students will make and cast in glass an actual leaf using this incredible high detail mold mix. This is a favorite derived from 1982 Isenberg “Crafting with Glass” book.
Project 2 – Organic Materials. You will turn a real strawberry into a glass strawberry. This is a prelude to your dimensional project.
Project 3 – Lost Wax. You will learn how to make a two part mold using RTV rubber. This is a great production process because the RTV molds can be cast over and over again. The "Cire perdue" method of sculpting will be used to create a 2" x 2" x 1" lost wax sculpture that can have undercuts and the finest details. A "sculpey clay" model will be cast into a two part rubber mold. Wax castings can be repeatedly formed from the rubber mold. The wax will be encased in a Cire perdue investment then steamed out so glass can be placed inside the mold and fired.
Project 4 – Cast-o-lot. Make a reusable 3-D tile molds using Cast-o-Lot in combination with tree branches, leaves, frogs and lizards – oh my.
Project 5 - Back Embossed. Reverse glass casting using the hot Damz technique.
Project 6 - Open Face Rubber. A master rubber casting of a leaf is used to create a mold for lost wax, reverse casting and freeze and fuse. This is an all in one mold for three different techniques.
Complete firing and annealing schedules (included with your notes) will be discussed along with informative and inspiring slide shows. We want to emphasize this is an intense advanced class that will keep you working for the full three days.

Lab Fee $100 includes three styles of investment, brushes, clay, RTV silicone, RTV Urethane, silicone putty, Hot damz kit, metal mold, RTV release, wax, and all of the glass used in class.

Tools to bring: X-acto knife, glass cutter, pliers, running pliers, safety glasses, clay carving tools (any thing that can be used to shape and cut clay, the lace tool, shifting screens and a fine line shifter and a dust mask.)

This class is limited to 15 students.
